JY Yang is a queer, non-binary Singaporean author and editor of SFF. They are the author of the upcoming Tensorate series of novellas from Tor.Com Publishing (THE RED THREADS OF FORTUNE, THE BLACK TIDES OF HEAVEN), and they have over two dozen works of short fiction published in places such as Uncanny Magazine, Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, and Lackington’s.
In previous incarnations, JY has been a molecular biologist; a writer for animation, comics and games; and a journalist for one of Singapore’s major papers. Currently, they edit fiction for Epigram Books.
A postcolonial intersectional feminist, their work often examines issues of race, class, and gender. Their work has been described thus in a profile by Haralambi Markov for Tor.com (article written before their pronoun change):
In the entirety of [their] work, there is subtlety, clarity of intent, and a strong yearning. [Their] stories consistently make a lasting impression and, upon viewing them as a cohesive body, the cumulative effect leaves me greatly satisfied and fulfilled as a reader.
J graduated from the 2013 class of Clarion West. In 2015 they were awarded a postgraduate scholarship from the National Arts Council of Singapore to read their MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, Britain.
They are represented by DongWon Song of Howard Morhaim Literary.
